Fragrance under load-shedding: stability that survives the shelf

A fragrance that smells beautiful on a lab bench in Johannesburg in June is not the same product a shopper picks up in a Durban aisle in February. Between those two moments sits a supply chain that includes uninsulated warehouses, a diesel-heated truck, a load-shedding cycle, and a shelf that catches afternoon sun.

Stability is the quiet engineering underneath every fragrance we ship. It is also the part of the brief that gets least airtime — until a batch turns, discolours or splits, and a range gets pulled.

What actually goes wrong

Fragrance failure at retail almost never looks like a single dramatic event. It looks like a top note that has flattened, a juice that has yellowed, a spray that has weakened, or a cap that has bloomed. Individually small; commercially expensive.

  • Top-note loss — light, volatile molecules escape or oxidise, and the opening the shopper smelled at launch is gone.
  • Discolouration — UV, heat and certain naturals push the juice from clear to amber.
  • Phase separation — cloudiness or a visible ring where solubilisers have given up.
  • Pack interaction — plasticisers, inks and gaskets leach or fail when the juice is aggressive.

Why South Africa is a harder test than most

Local distribution routinely exposes stock to conditions European stability protocols simply do not model. Warehouses without climate control can sit at 40°C for weeks. Load-shedding means a fridged storage room cycles up and down every day. Long inland routes from port to shelf add days of thermal load.

That is why we design stability programmes against local worst case, not international standard. A juice that only passes 40°C for three months is a juice that will fail in a Highveld summer.

How we test

Every fragrance we develop runs a layered protocol before it is signed off for production. The point is not to check one variable — it is to model the shelf.

  • Accelerated ageing at 40°C and 45°C for up to twelve weeks, with weekly pulls.
  • Cycling between 4°C and 40°C to mimic load-shedding and cold-truck-to-warehouse swings.
  • Compatibility testing against every candidate pack — bottle, cap, gasket, pump, label adhesive, secondary carton.
  • Sensory panel at each pull to confirm the opening, heart and dry-down still read as intended.

Formulation choices that buy stability

Some of the biggest wins happen before the juice ever hits a stability oven. Choosing the right solubiliser system, capping antioxidants correctly, and specifying UV-inhibited glass or coated PET turns a fragile juice into a resilient one without changing what the shopper smells.

What this means for a retail brief

Retail partners often ask for a specific scent reference and a specific price. The third variable — stability — is the one that decides whether the range is still on shelf in month nine. Our job is to hold all three: scent, cost and the resilience to survive a South African summer.
